Native the Arctic regions, they are the only owl with mostly white plumage with the male being more white and the females having more markings for camouflage. A nomadic bird, they rarely breed in the same area and not at all if there is little game to hunt. Listed as vulnerable with their populations down to less than 30,000. There were over 200,000 in 2013.
