Also known as buffalo they came to North America 400,000 years ago and ranged from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico. They were much larger then, having horns that measured 9’ from tip to tip. The herds were hunted to near extinction up to the late 19th century. Today there are 500,000 in the US, including the 5000 in Yellowstone.
